    I Capture the Castle
Review by Lauren W., age 17, Mensa in Georgia
Dodie Smith’s novel I Capture the Castle is a journey through the mind of a young writer as she attempts to chronicle her daily life. Seventeen-year-old Cassandra Mortmain has recently learned to speed-write, and she decides to work on her writing skills by describing the actions and conversations of those around her.
Cassandra lives in a fourteenth-century English castle with an interesting cast of characters: her beautiful older sister, Rose; her rather unsociable author father and his second wife, artist-model Topaz; Stephen, the garden boy; a cat and a bull terrier; and sometimes her brother Thomas when he is home from school. One fateful day they make the acquaintance of the Cotton family, including the two sons, and a web of tangled relationships ensues.

  5. Book Review: The Story of a Beautiful Girl
New book from Rachel Simon is a story of love and hope.
    Posted Jul 24, 2011

The Story of a Beautiful Girl is a love story unlike any before.

Written by best-selling author Rachel Simon.
The Story of a Beautiful Girl explores the love between two people that others assume incapable of connection. And, though fiction, offers a look into the dark past of America’s institutions and the abuse and neglect of people too vulnerable to fight back.

The book has been an Indie Bound Bestseller, Christian Science Monitor Bestseller and highlighted by Oprah Magazine and USA Today. Simon blogs frequently about her travels, her writing and her advocacy for people with disabilities.

The Story of a Beautiful Girl is a wonderful and brave story.

    Review by Kelly Robison

In this ambitious work, Leòn-Portilla endeavors to ascertain the existence of a class of philosophers in Aztec society. If philosophy, and not merely religion, was present in Nahuatl culture, what did these philosophers attempt to accomplish? Through a study of Nahuatl texts and post-Conquest records, Leòn-Portilla examines the manifestations of rational thought and inquiry in Mexico prior to the Conquest.

While it’s only fair to request — no, demand — that comic book movies get the respect they deserve, the same can hardly be said for films based on video games. While even the most generic comic book movies are beginning to push boundaries like never before, video game adaptations have for decades squandered every opportunity they’ve been given — a wealth of immensely successful source material, A-list actors and directors, tentpole budgets, and a freedom that wouldn’t have been possible without the comic book adaptations whose success they hope to emulate.

When four high-school kids discover an old video game console with a game they’ve never heard of–Jumanji–they are immediately drawn into the game’s jungle setting, literally becoming the avatars they chose: gamer Spencer becomes a brawny adventurer (Dwayne Johnson); football jock Fridge loses (in his words) “the top two feet of his body” and becomes an Einstein (Kevin Hart); popular girl Bethany becomes a middle-aged male professor (Jack Black); and wallflower Martha becomes a badass warrior (Karen Gillan). What they discover is that you don’t just play Jumanji–you must survive it. To beat the game and return to the real world, they’ll have to go on the most dangerous adventure of their lives, discover what Alan Parrish left 20 years ago, and change the way they think about themselves–or they’ll be stuck in the game forever. ,Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle uses a charming cast and a humorous twist to offer an undemanding yet solidly entertaining update on its source material.

  17. Judith Bennett’s Ale, Beer, and Brewsters in England

One of feminism’s paradoxes—one that challenges many of its optimistic histories—is how patriarchy remains persistent over time. While
Judith Bennett’s Ale, Beer, and Brewsters in England: Women’s Work in a Changing World, 1300-1600 recognizes medieval women as historical actors through their ale brewing, it also shows that female agency had its limits with the advent of beer. I had assumed that those limits were religious and political, but Bennett shows how a “patriarchal equilibrium” shut women out of economic life as well. Her analysis of women’s wages in ale and beer production proves that a change in women’s work does not equate to a change in working women’s status. Contemporary feminists and historians alike should read Bennett’s book and think twice when they crack open their next brewsky.

While editing errors and organizational incongruities plague some of the latter chapters, many of the shortcomings of this first edition will likely be alleviated by later editions. Titanic Movie Review
    Titanic
    | Roger Ebert

    December 19, 1997 |
Like a great iron Sphinx on the ocean floor, the Titanic faces still toward the West, interrupted forever on its only voyage. We see it in the opening shots of “Titanic,” encrusted with the silt of 85 years; a remote-controlled TV camera snakes its way inside, down corridors and through doorways, showing us staterooms built for millionaires and inherited by crustaceans.

These shots strike precisely the right note; the ship calls from its grave for its story to be told, and if the story is made of showbiz and hype, smoke and mirrors–well, so was the Titanic. She was “the largest moving work of man in all history,” a character boasts, neatly dismissing the Pyramids and the Great Wall. There is a shot of her, early in the film, sweeping majestically beneath the camera from bow to stern, nearly 900 feet long and “unsinkable,” it was claimed, until an iceberg made an irrefutable reply.

James Cameron’s 194-minute, $200 million film of the tragic voyage is in the tradition of the great Hollywood epics. It is flawlessly crafted, intelligently constructed, strongly acted and spellbinding. If its story stays well within the traditional formulas for such pictures, well, you don’t choose the most expensive film ever made as your opportunity to reinvent the wheel.

We know before the movie begins that certain things must happen. We must see the Titanic sail and sink, and be convinced we are looking at a real ship. There must be a human story–probably a romance–involving a few of the passengers. There must be vignettes involving some of the rest and a subplot involving the arrogance and pride of the ship’s builders–and perhaps also their courage and dignity. And there must be a reenactment of the ship’s terrible death throes; it took two and a half hours to sink, so that everyone aboard had time to know what was happening, and to consider their actions.

All of those elements are present in Cameron’s “Titanic,” weighted and balanced like ballast, so that the film always seems in proportion. The ship was made out of models (large and small), visual effects and computer animation.
The human story involves an 17-year-old woman named Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet) who is sailing to what she sees as her own personal doom: She has been forced by her penniless mother to become engaged to marry a rich, supercilious snob named Cal Hockley (Billy Zane), and so bitterly does she hate this prospect that she tries to kill herself by jumping from the ship. She is saved by Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio), a brash kid from steerage, and of course they will fall in love during the brief time left to them.

The screenplay tells their story in a way that unobtrusively shows off the ship. Jack is invited to join Rose’s party at dinner in the first class dining room, and later, fleeing from Cal’s manservant, Lovejoy (David Warner), they find themselves first in the awesome engine room, with pistons as tall as churches, and then at a rousing Irish dance in the crowded steerage. (At one point Rose gives Lovejoy the finger; did young ladies do that in 1912?) Their exploration is intercut with scenes from the command deck, where the captain (Bernard Hill) consults with Andrews (Victor Garber), the ship’s designer and Ismay (Jonathan Hyde), the White Star Line’s managing director.

Ismay wants the ship to break the trans-Atlantic speed record. He is warned that icebergs may have floated into the hazardous northern crossing but is scornful of danger. The Titanic can easily break the speed record but is too massive to turn quickly at high speed; there is an agonizing sequence that almost seems to play in slow motion, as the ship strains and shudders to turn away from an iceberg in its path–and fails.

We understand exactly what is happening at that moment because of an ingenious story technique by Cameron, who frames and explains the entire voyage in a modern story. The opening shots of the real Titanic, we are told, are obtained during an expedition led by Brock Lovett (Bill Paxton), an undersea explorer. He seeks precious jewels but finds a nude drawing of a young girl. Meanwhile, an ancient woman sees the drawing on TV and recognizes herself. This is Rose (Gloria Stuart), still alive at 101. She visits Paxton and shares her memories (“I can still smell the fresh paint”). And he shows her video scenes
The image from the Titanic that has haunted me, ever since I first read the story of the great ship, involves the moments right after it sank. The night sea was quiet enough so that cries for help carried easily across the water to the lifeboats, which drew prudently away. Still dressed up in the latest fashions, hundreds froze and drowned. What an extraordinary position to find yourself in after spending all that money for a ticket on an unsinkable ship.

Opalescent colours of subtle tones can be suddenly juxtaposed to bright opaque primary patches expertly placed to jolt the senses, an experience that Stass Paraskos referred to as the ‘rusty nail’ that brings us up with a shock to the senses and draws us, the viewer in for a closer look, to be rewarded by the more quiet changes in mood effected by masterly use of soft mark making that lulls us back to a sense of security.

Her current location of Mexico City has certainly found its vibrant way into her recent work- the hustle and bustle of night life, with its promise of satisfied lusts or desires are clearly experienced in her elongated ‘nocturne’ panels (‘The Somnambulists Panorama I & II’) and the suggestion of dangerous excitement is the stamp of the ‘Posthumous Shadow’ and ‘Mapping Night’ where the real dangers of inner city night life become palpably tangible.

There is also present a sense of fun, the sheer enjoyment of shape and colour depicted in ‘Red Jelly, Yellow Jelly’ which levers memories of childhood party life form the depths of forgotten images but the levity does not detract form the sheer visual eloquence that is the hallmark of this artist.

The work is truly enjoyable and can be viewed at the artists website:

    Famous Paintings: The Scream

The Scream by Edvard Munch (1863-1944) is one of the most famous paintings in Western art history, and inarguably one of the most readily recognized.

Edvard Munch. The Scream, 1893. Tempera and casein on cardboard, 36 by 29″. Munch Museum, Oslo.
Edvard Munch. The Scream, 1893. Tempera and casein on cardboard, 36 by 29″. Munch Museum, Oslo.

The painter spent his childhood in Oslo, the second of five children born to a prominent Norwegian family. His mother and two siblings died when Munch was young. By the age of 17, Munch discovered painting as a tool to articulate his feelings of depression and fear of death.

Although he received little formal training, his style matured in the 1890s after his exposure in Paris to Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh paintings. Their energetic brushwork and bold colors provided a subjective vocabulary for personal interpretation of subjects.

These famous painters were among those experimenting with the direct expression of emotion as the primary element in painting, rather than the Impressionist aesthetic that valued style, form and color more highly. Munch viewed art making as a quest to express his most privately-held feelings and beliefs, saying

In my art I have tried to find an explanation for life and to discover its meaning. I also intended to help others understand life.

Trepan mummy from Chachapoya kingdom in Peru. AFP Photo Francois Guillot

To acheive this goal, Munch created The Frieze of Life, his lifelong series of paintings in which he sought to resolve elementary questions about life. This grand view of the purpose of art was not unusual, and was similarly pursued by artists in works such as

    Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) in Gates of Hell;
Paul Gauguin’s Where Do We Come From? Who are We? Where are We Going? and
    Pablo Picasso in La Vie.
The Frieze of Life consists of many well-known Edvard Munch paintings, including The Scream, but no other conveys the angst seen in it.

According to Thomas Hoving, past Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this iconic Munch work

…truly stands alone in art. Before Munch, no one in history portrayed human fear and pain outside of specific depictions of gladiatorial contests, battles and hand-to-hand combat, the torturing of saints, or people being attacked by fierce animals.” (1)

As with van Gogh, Munch’s deteriorating mental condition underlies his work. But an important distinction exists between these two famous painters: van Gogh translated his agitation and duress into symbols like cypress trees, sunflowers and menacing skies (read more about Vincent van Gogh paintings), where Munch literally painted his pain.

Some art historians believe that he suffered a panic or anxiety attack, recreated in The Scream. Munch wrote in his diary,

“One evening I was walking along a street, tired and ill, with two friends: the city and the fjord lay below us. The sun was setting and the clouds turned blood red. Then I heard the colours of nature scream – and that shrill cry echoed over the fjord.” (2)

    Krakatoa volcano.
    Krakatoa volcano.

Other art historians reference the 1883 Indonesian volcano, Krakatoa, whose eruption generated deafening sound waves that traveled 1,500 miles, cloaking Europe in preternatural blue and red sunsets for half a year.

After seeing these effects in present day Oslo, Edvard Munch wrote,
… I sensed a great, infinite scream pass through nature.”

Yet another inspiration may have been a Trepan mummy from the Peruvian Chachapoya kingdom (above right). The Trepan mummy was shown at Paris’ Trocadero Museum, and likely at the 1889 World’s Fair, so Munch could have readily seen this image.

Regardless of what inspired Munch, though, the agony is excrutiating: the sound is so overpowering and crippling that it distorts the face of the figure, who vainly cups his ears to protect them. Notably, the two figures in the left background are unaffected, suggesting that the figure’s turmoil may only be internal.

The Scream is a universal symbol of suffering.

    Is there any alternative explanation?

This prepares us for another moment when Princess Fiona’s singing voice is so piercing it causes jolly little bluebirds to explode; making the best of a bad situation, she fries their eggs. Wye Oak ’s 2011 album Civilian was a major inflection point for the band. Supporting the record brought the Baltimore duo of Andy Stack and Jenn Wasner across oceans, onto “The Tonight Show,” and into the arsenal of Hollywood music supervisors. By the end of the year, after wringing every possible variation out of their setlist, they were spent. “I feel like our band is going to change very, very drastically from here on out in order to remain vital to us,” Wasner noted in an interview with the Village Voice . And so they did, situationally and stylistically. Stack moved to the artistic enclave of Marfa, Texas, and then on to Portland, Oregon. At the same time, Wasner set her guitar aside as she worked on her throwback chirp-pop project Dungeonesse ; the results were sufficiently freeing that Wye Oak’s 2014 follow-up, Shriek, eschewed the six-string almost entirely.
This is a standard narrative: a band that has to evolve or die. But more than that, it’s the story of trying to maintain relationships as adulthood scatters everyone to the winds. In order to make Shriek , Stack and Wasner passed demos back and forth. This time, they opted for a series of home/away dates, alternating weeks recording in Marfa (to which Stack returned after Shriek ) and Durham, North Carolina (Wasner’s home since 2015). The strategy forced more direct collaboration, as well as a spirit of first-thought-best-thought. The result is The Louder I Call, the Faster It Runs, which, for all its weight, has the particular giddiness of conspirators reuniting.

    ★★★★★
The Thracian slave Spartacus, thought to have been a deserter from the Roman army, was sold to a school for gladiators at Capua but never got to the arena, leading a slave revolt in 73 BC and devastating Southern Italy with an army of former slaves and gladiators. He was defeated in battle in 71 BC by Marcus Crassus, probably dying on the field of combat rather than surviving (as in the movie) to be crucified. Crassus, with Pompey and Julius Caesar, formed the first Triumvirate of Rome, precursor to the Emperorship of the Caesars, but came to a bad end in 53 BC when he was himself killed in a war he had started

Review of Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
    by Cynthia Alexandre-Brutus
    February 9, 2017
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Half of a Yellow Sun offers a heart-wrenching account of the Biafran War (1967-1970), beautifully wrapped in a story of love, loyalty, betrayal, resilience, and hope. She places a human face on a war that has been far removed from historical memory outside of Nigeria. As a result of the massacre of the Igbo people in the predominantly Muslim Hausa North, Igbos of the South sought to establish their own state: Biafra. In response, the Nigerian government declared war against Biafra, unwilling to allow the oil-rich south-east to secede. The war was catalyzed by the remnants of British colonialism, which created fragmented national boundaries and provoked ethnic tension between the two groups. Although the book is a work of historical fiction, it is based on very real accounts and exhaustive research of the Biafran War and continuing conflict.
Moreover, separatist sentiment lives on through the Indigenous People of Biafra, a movement led by Nnamdi Kanu, who was arrested by Nigeria’s Department of State Services in October 2015 on “treasonable felony” charges. His arrest has sparked pro-Biafran protests and violence between security forces and civilians, while Kanu remains in detention. In light of this, Adichie’s book is all the more relevant today, as the wounds of the war are still fresh for many Nigerians and the fight for Biafra’s independence continues.
Through Adichie’s prose, we are offered a glimpse into the lives of several very different and multifaceted characters who are all determined to survive in the Free State of Biafra. One of the main characters, Odenigbo, is a math professor at a university in Nsukka, a revolutionary thinker and an ardent Biafran who struggles with the psychological impact of war violence. Olanna is Odenigbo’s wife; she is of the Nigerian elite and attempting to cope with being thrust from her comfort zone while striving to keep her family intact throughout the war. Richard is a shy English expatriate who falls in love with Olanna’s fraternal twin, Kainene. Throughout the novel, he seeks to identify as Biafran, in order to break

    Process of writing a review:
1.Skim read the text – note the main question or questions the text tries to answer and the main answers it gives.
2.Think of evaluation criteria. Talk about the text and criteria with classmates.
3.Read the text again and note the important points in detail such as the subject, question, arguments and/or evidence, and conclusions made, and your evaluation using your criteria.
4.Read related texts, note differences or similarities and explain these.
5.Outline critical review, matching points of description with evaluation criteria.
    6.Start writing review.
    Structure of a critical review
    Title:
usually looks like an entry in a bibliography.
    E.g. Kotter, J 1990, ‘What Leaders Really Do’, Harvard Business Review, vol. 68, no. 3, p. 103.
    Introduction should contain:
*A general overview of the topic or question(s) of the text, including the importance of the topic or question.
*Your evaluation of the merits of the text, with brief reasons.
*An explanation of how the critical review will be organised.
E.g. Leadership is different from management and this article provides a clear, cogent explanation of the difference.
    (From Coyle 2000)
Body of Critical Review should contain:
1.Summary / description of original (may be integrated or separate).
E.g. Kotter examines the difference between leadership and management across three major sets of tasks: setting direction versus planning and budgeting; aligning people versus organisation and staffing; and motivating versus controlling and problem solving.
    (Adapted from Coyle 2000)
2.Evaluation of the text. (note underlined criteria used)
E.g. Kotter’s insights, tools, and ideas for action are relevant but the need for more insight is great. [You should explain why in more detail]
    (From Coyle 2000)
You may not always feel you are able to judge whether the argument in a text is correct or not. It may be useful to explain first how the arguments given in the text are the same, or different from arguments given in other texts on the same topic. Then, if they are different, explain which argument you find more convincing and why.
E.g. Like Mintzberg, Kotter concludes that the jobs of a manager and a leader are not filled with neatly segmented tasks such as planning or organising.
    (From Gibson 1999)
    Conclusion :
Critical reviews don’t always need a conclusion so you must decide whether to include one or not. If you think a conclusion is necessary you should summarise your arguments on your overall view of the text.
In sum, this is some of Kotter’s best work. It is a good resource for the practising manager who wants a quick and reliable, even practical source of information on what constitutes effective leadership today.
    (Adapted from Gibson 1999)

The woman is the focus of the painting. She is wearing an accesory on top of her head that demonstrates elegance. The colors used by the author is considered to be quite different as each color conveys a seperate impression.
Picasso wanted the audience to feel the pain and provide a statement that explains how all women feel and the agony they are consistently in.

These shots strike precisely the right note; the ship calls from its grave for its story to be told, and if the story is made of showbiz and hype, smoke and mirrors.

And he shows her video scenes from his explorations, including a computer simulation of the Titanic’s last hours–which doubles as a briefing for the audience. By the time the ship sinks, we already know what is happening and why, and the story can focus on the characters while we effortlessly follow the stages of the Titanic’s sinking.

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland sees Lewis Carroll’s Alice returning to ‘Underland’ at the age of 19, falling down a hole in pursuit of the familiar white rabbit, and more importantly in flight from an unwelcome marriage proposal. She has no memory of her childhood visit, and the fantastical characters debate among themselves whether she is in fact ‘the right Alice’. But of course, really this is a question Alice herself must answer: can she remain the free spirit with the wild imagination that was encouraged by her late father, or must she ‘grow up’ and learn to conform to Victorian Britain’s expectations of a young woman of her social class?

Led by singer Frances Quinlan and her remarkable songcraft, the Philly band’s third album is warm and spacious, filled with rich stories rendered beautifully in the abstract.
u listen to Frances Quinlan sing long enough, you will attempt to describe her voice. This is a trap, and you should not do this. The frontwoman for Philadelphia indie rock band Hop Along doesn’t have one voice—she might have 10. Listing them would yield no insight, only a deranged sommelier’s tasting notes: cat, bugle, Rod Stewart, roaring motorcycle.
Howling, hooting, crooning, cracking—the real intrigue behind these magnificent sounds isn’t how but why. Quinlan is one of rock’s great listeners, keen to the way people’s internal monologues fill a space like bad weather, and she seems to be trying to channel them all at once in her voice. She wields her empathy the way some rock singers brandish anger, and it’s a smarter tool; empathy cuts cleaner. Her singing is a reasonable response to an impossible task—you try being this many people and see how you sound.

The song I believe I can fly by R kelly
The first thing that stands out in this song
is the steady beats/rhythm in the beginning
of the song. It is like “I believe I can fly” is
trying to make a melody out of the song.
The second thing that stands out in this
song is the singer and his tone. I also have
something to tag to this song it is sad and
slow. The final thing that stands out in this
song is the changes in the rhythm. It’s like
the song is about someone’s feelings and
    it’s sad.
    The Bad:
I think the song takes a little longer than
most songs and the bridge doesn’t stick
out. On the other hand, the chorus I think
is a little messed up because it doesn’t
change that much. I also think the song is a
little off because their is no C Verse in “I
Believe I can fly”. I think the singer should
also sing the B Verse 1 then the A Verse.
    Recommendation:
I recommend this song to anyone who is
interested in R&B music. This song, isn’t
nonsense it will make you sleepy and make
you believe you could do anything.

    About
Marsupials is the title so the book is about…marsupials, of course. It’s non-fiction. I really think everyone would like the book. I think someone who likes animals would especially like to read it.
The glossary of facts in the back of About Marsupials is the most useful part. I thought the most interesting parts were that some marsupials have their pouch at their back legs and one marsupial, the Yellow- footed Rock Wallaby, is very small but can jump 13 feet wide!
Kids in the 4-8 age range would like this book. Even though it’s not a story book, 4 year olds would like the few words on each page and they would love the beautiful pictures. But older kids would like it because of all the facts in the back of the book. There’s a lot of information for each animal. I think boys and girls (and parents) would enjoy reading it. This book is very interesting. I give it 4 stars.

The Devil’s Company, a treat for lovers of historical fiction, sees the return of Benjamin Weaver in his third exciting romp through the varied and sometimes surreal landscape of 18th-century London. Weaver is an endearing protagonist, a former pugilist and investigator for hire whom we first met in David Liss’s A Conspiracy of Paper (1999).” Historical fiction is mostly smoke and mirrors. Modern writers really don’t know what it was like to live in the past—no matter how much research they do—so the success of the enterprise depends largely on creating a convincing illusion. Liss rises to this challenge with great skill in this accomplished, atmospheric and thoughtful novel.”

Review: In John Krasinski’s ‘A Quiet Place,’ Silence Means Survival

John Krasinski, with Noah Jupe, in “A Quiet Place.”JONNY COURNOYER/PARAMOUNT PICTURES

    By JEANNETTE CATSOULIS

    April 4, 2018

True to its title, John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place” tiptoes forward, camera fixed on the naked, padding feet of the Abbott family as they scavenge in a deserted supermarket. A title card announces Day 89 — of what, we don’t know — so we look for clues. Lee and Evelyn (Mr. Krasinski and his real-life wife, Emily Blunt) and their three children communicate urgently in sign language, and the youngest child’s interest in a battery-operated toy causes immediate alarm. Their fear is palpable, but what are they afraid of?

Thanks to that darned toy, we’re about to find out, in a perfectly executed attack sequence that establishes the stakes, and the family’s plight, with swift efficiency. Now minus one and watched by flapping posters of other missing souls, the Abbotts return to their farm as the story (by Bryan Woods and Scott Beck) leaps forward more than a year. Evelyn is now preparing to give birth, Lee is teaching his son (Noah Jupe) to forage, and their daughter (played by the remarkable young deaf actor,Millicent Simmonds) is angrily chafing against her parents’ protectiveness.

Book review:THE FORGOTTEN ART OF LOVE BY Armin A Zaden and reviewed by Debbie Hagan…

The book “The forgotten art of love” is written in an authoritative but conversational style, the reading is easy and the point clear and well-supported….

What’s most important in the forgotten art of love, what love means and why it matters is its examination of the aged old question. Zadeh distinqueshes love from emotions that seem like love, lust, affection and infatuation. This explains why so many marriage fail after a few years while others seem to endure even though the partners may seem mismatched or barely tolerant of one another.
Zadeh defines love as the urge and continuous effort for another person’s happiness and well-being.

      I Capture the Castle
      | Roger Ebert

      July 18, 2003 |
I Capture the Castle is the kind of novel dreamy adolescents curl up with on rainy Saturdays, imagining themselves as members of a poor but brilliantly eccentric family living in a decrepit English castle. It’s that kind of movie, too, about a sublimely impractical family given to sudden dramatic outbursts. It’s a romance ever so much more inspiring for teenage girls than the materialist propaganda they get from Hollywood, teaching them to value genius above accessories. And there’s a serious undercurrent; this story was close to the heart of the author, Dodie Smith, whose other novel, 101 Dalmatians, was more light-hearted and aimed at younger readers.

    HINDS-I don’t run

Hinds specialize in songs about love—which are not the same as love songs. Their jaunty tunes don’t so much offer declarations of devotion as catalog all the conflicted emotions, second-guessing, and compromises that lead up to them. In a Hinds song, love isn’t the product of the universe bringing two soulmates together, love is the result of uncomfortable conversations and ultimatums issued after one too many casual hook-ups. But on I Don’t Run, the Madrid quartet wade through these messy feelings with confidence and exuberance to spare, taking us on a pleasure cruise through choppy waters.
    I Don’t Run melts down its ’60s girl-group, ’90s twee, and post-
    DeMarco indie-pop influences down
Hinds is a Spanish rock band of a singer-guitarists Ana Perrote and Carlotta Cosials.
But unlike most foils, these two are always working together as they wave through love messy feelings with confidence.

Hoping to find the closure that they couldn’t as young men, they’re forced to reconsider the cult’s beliefs when confronted with unexplainable phenomena surrounding the camp. Originals is here as an ally, an enemy, a thought provoker, a calming salve, and, most of all, an inspirer devoted to challenging your beliefs, your truths and mixing them up with real stories, all in an effort to exfoliate the nasty crust you are wearing and release the adornment being hidden. That is the embellishment of an original. One who conquers the world. Throughout the book, you meet people you will notice are like you in several aspects. As you get acquainted with them and it is my prayer that what they did, what they accomplished, the mistakes they made, the opportunities they had, and the lives they lived, may serve as a spring whence wisdom of change will flow into you, making you what you have always wished to be but did not know how. The song in your heart needs to be heard. You may not know what impact it will make, how many souls it will transform, how many children it will provoke to think, or how far ahead it will propel the wheel of progress on our planet.

A combination of Igbo traditional music, romance, and high life.
A quick glance at “Ijele – The Traveler” Album Cover shows a man running in a bid to escape danger or survive, but a detailed view of the same photo depicts a man dancing wildly. According to Flavour, Ijele – The Traveler is a deeper concept than physical movement. It is spiritual, soulful and natural. The album’s title was culled from Igbo masquerade culture, where the Ijele is recognized as the largest and most ceremonial of them all.
“Ijele the Traveler” , is a combination of Igbo traditional music, romance, and high life. The Lead single “ Virtuous Woman ” is unremarkable, but a remake of earlier hits ‘Golibe’ and ‘Ada Ada’ ; a ballad where he describes and praises his ideal woman, with gratitude to God that he found her. “ Chimamanda ” and “ Most High ” were devoted to acknowledge and show gratitude to God.
“ Ijele” attempted to recapture the good old Igbo song that resounds in the air during wrestling and “Otu Ogbo” (Igbo young men) activities with a flawless delivery by Zoro. “ Oringo”, advocates for people to be happy, have fun and enjoy their lives and a Mike Ejeagha inspired line –“Kedu ife m mere eji akpuru m n’ onu?” (What did I do that people are talking about me?). In “ Oppressor ”, Flavour reaches out to the oppressors and a few messages to runs girls, unappreciative husbands, rough drivers, and embezzlers.
“ Baby Na Yoka ”, a Jamaican inspired and dance hall vibe stole elements from one of Flavour’s hit singles “Baby Oku”. I recommend this single to Afro beat fans overseas. “ Catch you ”, “ Jaiye ”, “ Ukwu Nwata ”, “ Body Calling” and “ Simba ” clearly depict Flavour’s erotic and funny choice of words especially in Igbo for describing the feminine features and his escapades with them.
In “ Sake of Love”, the Singer describes what he would do for love’s sake with hyperbole; “Just to prove my love, I will cry you a river”. If it is getting hard to woe her, I recommend deploying the lyrics of “ Loose Guard”. “ Nnekata ” would come handy while proposing to her.
If at any point, Ijele –The Traveler plays like a record made in a hurry, it is because of a song like “ Iheneme ”. “I wee na-eme order? I gbasapu ukwu, m gbasapu aka” (You are ordering abi? If you open your leg, I will open my hands, in other words, I will spend on you), the “ Skit ” got me laughing hard.
Ijele – The Traveler is indeed an album a typical Easterner, Lover’s of Igbo culture and Flavour’s fans would enjoy.

There Was a Country by Chinua Achebe – review
Chinua Achebe’s lament for his native Biafra and the decline of Nigeria is powerful and moving
    Sun 4 Aug 2013 11.00 BST
C hinua Achebe, who died in March, was a giant of African literature. His 1958 novel,
Things Fall Apart , has sold more than 10m copies; his Anthills of the Savannah
is undoubtedly one of the finest novels to come out of Africa.
Part of the appeal of his novels is that they are wonderfully well written. He has paid tribute here to his very English education at the best schools in Nigeria and how it moulded his literary career. But while he was reading classic English texts, he was also immersing himself in the traditional stories of Nigeria, which crop up in all his books.
There Was a Country is in fact a lament for Biafra and the decline of Nigeria, which he relates directly to the Biafran war. Achebe was an Igbo, from the east of Nigeria. In his telling, the Igbo aroused hostility because of their intelligence and success; they had always been a democratic, well-educated and progressive people, and they flourished in the bigger context of Nigeria; jealousy of their influence built up and led to measures that echo the persecution of Jews in Germany.
Achebe, who was very senior in Nigerian broadcasting, felt that he had to leave Lagos, a place he loved, and return to the east. It was clear that the future of the Igbo in the wider Nigeria was uncertain, to say the least, with pressure from the Muslim north also increasing.
On 30 May 1967 the new state of Biafra was declared independent by Colonel Ojukwu on the grounds that easterners were no longer safe in Nigeria. War broke out almost immediately. It was a war of appalling savagery: images of the deaths of millions of Biafran children shocked the world, but no coherent plan to end the horror was ever implemented. In the end – January 1970 – Biafra had to surrender. Achebe says the Igbo have never fully recovered, and Nigeria has slid into a morass of corruption.
Throughout the war Achebe was closely involved. For a while he was an emissary for Biafra and was widely known in the world. Long after the war he turned down an honour from the government in Lagos. This important book tells a powerful story from within Achebe’s world, a world made lucidly and movingly real by a great writer.

Cinderella is an American romantic fantasy film. The film is based on eponymous folk tales. The story talks about the fortunes of young Ella whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. The movie is very interesting. it teaches a lot of lessons.
To begin with, Cinderella the screen writer Chris embraces both the magic and humanity of classic fairy tale. it so swaggering in it’s confidence that at times it almost commands to like. it’s also unexpectedly delicate in all the right ways.
The good thing about this is that it teaches a lot of moral lesson for the wicked, and also grab a lot of good things. it a romantic film that talks about most especially Cinderella’ s stepmother, the prince and Cinderella.

Many a fairy tale concludes with, “And they lived happily ever after.” Fewer begin from such a place. But for Ella, life was indeed enchanted.
Growing up in a sprawling country mansion, her days consist of communicating with her animal friends (especially four mice living in the house) and basking in the delight of her doting parents. But then Ella’s mother falls mortally ill. On her death bed, she beckons Ella close to tell her “a great secret that will see you through all the trials life has to offer: Have courage and be kind.”
As the years roll by, Ella and her father, a merchant, make a good effort to enjoy life together. But melancholy fills his heart, a longing for companionship. And so, when he meets a beautiful widow with two daughters about Ella’s age, it seems a perfect opportunity for a second chapter of familial bliss.
        Except that it isn’t.
You already know that Lady Tremaine is as cruel as her daughters are vain. And when Ella’s father dies on a journey, the teen girl is left with little more in this world than the concepts of courage and kindness her mother bequeathed to her.

Hungover, bitter and thoroughly uninvested in the success of the company’s promotional giveaway that gives “Free Samples” its title, Jillian is a law school dropout guilted into subbing in for her best friend, Nancy (Halley Feiffer), who is stuck at an intervention for her alcoholic brother. (Never mind that Jillian can probably drink him under the table.) As Jillian prays for escape, not that she has anything better to do, customers come hungry and leave angry. If they have a weakness, she’ll exploit it — she even bribes a homeless woman to bring her a coffee.
“Free Samples” is a film about wasting time, and it feels like it. Despite clocking in at 79 minutes, Jay Gammill’s comedy drags by no fault of its delightfully sour lead. With her droll delivery and big blue eyes, Weixler — who came to indie fame playing a virgin with a befanged vagina in “Teeth” — has the air of a slacker Bette Davis. Naturally, the only person on this sunbaked block she treats kindly is a classic movie star played by Tippi Hedren.

    Reviewer:Chidi Nwaonu.

In pursuit of this review have done 3 things I said I wouldn’t do; I bought a book in hardback. I read ‘There was a country: A Personal History of Biafra’ by Chinua Achebe. I am writing a review of it.
The first thing I will say is that this is not Achebe’s best book, be it fiction or non-fiction. Nor will I say it is his most relevant; as Things Fall Apart still wins that accolade just for being what it is.
It is however one of the most relevant books about Nigeria by a Nigerian. Not just for what it says but for what it causes to be said.
Once it came out the usual suspects inevitably emerged from the wood work, the ethnic supremacists, Biafra nostalgists, Igbo everyone-hates-us-ists, Yoruba justificationists, tribal chauvinists, Northern oligarchists, minority tribe what-about-us-ists, the-One-Nigeria-but I hate-the-rest-of-you-ists, text speak writing I don’t fully understand but I’ve got to write something unintelligible commentatorists. Prayers warriors have deployed en masse with curses, praise and damnation in all tongues and to various gods, deities and non-specific supreme beings. But then any book written about Biafra, from the perspective of a Biafran particularly one as high profile as Achebe will elicit a spirited response, it would be equally depressing if it didn’t.
It is the strange reality of the Nigerian Civil War that its history is written almost exclusively by the losers. The vast majority of the literature, fiction and non-fiction from the military or civilian perspective is written by Igbo’s. This could be due to the fact that the vast number of Igbo intellectuals who suffered and stayed in Biafra, reacted the only way they could with words whilst for other Nigerian intellectuals the war was an abstraction as opposed to a daily reality. Those that have written from the Federal side all had a personal connection such as Wole Soyinka (who was imprisoned for his anti war views), Elechi Amadi and Ken Saro Wiwa.
In essence there has been no attempt at any sort of narrative by the side that won, thus there is no credible way to dispute or even present a conflicting argument (if one was inclined to) to the prevailing story of the war. So for Easterners in general and Igbos in particular the story of this glorious but doomed fight for freedom and survival is ingrained in the soul and preserved in literature and poetry, yet for the rest of Nigeria it is barely mentioned thus when the topic comes up for discussion it turns into a battle of rumours against certitude.
Yet the parts about Biafra are to me less interesting, possibly for this very reason and also due to the fact that these parts are comparatively poorly written, with factual errors, misuse of military terms and misplacement of incidents, such as referring to General Effiong as the Biafran Army Commander (actually General Madiebo) or inferring that Britain supplied Nigeria with MiGs (actually supplied by the USSR) or stating that Murtala Mohammed took Onitsha on the second attempt (it was at the 3rd). Pedantic points of interest to a history buff but they are also telling omissions by a sensitive man of letters who not only abhorred war in its abstract but in its object and its reality and this war in particular which destroyed the culture and country he so revered.
However despite the book’s title I believe the country he most mourns for is not Biafra, but Nigeria.
Not just the Nigeria of 2012 or the Nigeria of 1960 but also the Nigeria before Nigeria was Nigeria. For the customs, cultures and practices of the tribes and nations that inhabit the landmass known as Nigeria.
Seen with the eyes of a ‘British protected’ son of studious, Christian parents and grand nephew to a genial unapologetic animist and through the mind of a hard working student going through the colonial education system rising through merit and hard work to the peak of his profession and work, this is an elegy to an innocent time, when possibilities were possible and endless and the best was yet to come.
It is in fact like a man staring back at his life, with a wry smile to the romances of his youth, shaking his head at his naivety, remembering the good times but skipping over and ill remembering the bad times.
Nigerian independence as it appears in this book is like an arranged marriage, with one reluctant suitor, an eager one and a quasi eager one. This weird unhappy polygamy was made a reality by giving control of the marriage to the entity that wanted to be in it the least yet had the most to gain from it.
Achebe was by this point an ardent Nigerian nationalist, working in the government media, with an eclectic assortment of friends and colleagues from all over the Federation. In fact his observations to the crisis in Nigeria can be likened to that of a wronged spouse going through the stages of grief.
First there was denial expressed by staying in Lagos despite being one of the most high profile, non political Igbo’s, whom soldiers were actively looking for and even going to work during the pogroms, until warned off by his Yoruba boss.
And then anger, at the ‘Triangle Game’ of the Soviet Union, Britain and France, with the first two supporting the Federal side overtly with arms and aircraft and the latter supporting Biafra covertly with enough arms to keep fighting but not enough to win.
With the OAU and UN for their impotence and deference to the Federal position.
With Awolowo and Adekunle for their ‘starvation is a weapon of war’ mantra.
Then bargaining, looking towards elder statesmen like Aminu Kano and Nnamdi Azikiwe to find a negotiated way out of the crisis.
And then depression as evinced by the alarming chapter titles in Part 4 of the book such as Corruption and Indiscipline and State Failure and the Rise of Terrorism.
I’m not sure he has got round to acceptance.

The Book of Life represents Guillermo del Toro’s most hands-on foray (to date) into the realm of family friendly entertainment; this is closer in tone and sensibility to one of Tim Burton’s offbeat animated films than one of Pixar’s more “vanilla” productions. The visual aesthetic is unusual with the characters being modeled as 3-D wooden puppets. I was reminded of a more polished version of some of the old live action TV Christmas specials. Background detail doesn’t match that of many other big budget animated films but the presentation is quirky enough to make this less important. The 3-D, however, is disappointing. It adds nothing and is so low-key that it might as well not be there.

That is the magnitude of power that that song wields and originals is here to make you release it into the world where it belongs. Arinze Obiageli 2016054110 team molgadishu.

Tom O’Brien’s “Fairhaven” is about two lost thirty-something friends who are brought together when their third friend returns for his father’s funeral. All have desires that have gone unfulfilled and only one has reached an age-appropriate level of maturity. Personal relationship dynamics in need of a feeling of immediacy are explored in more depth on television. O’Brien never quite finds a focus around which to center the longing that all three boys/men feel. Unlikely to get a theatrical release, “Fairhaven” seems destined for numerous rounds on the film festival circuit.

    Tupac – Dear Momma
    Music Review by Clinton Young

    Song: Dear Momma
    Artist: 2pac (Tupac)
    Genre: Hip Hop

    Review:

The struggles that children go through, transcends ethnic lines. The first time I heard this song play as a teenager. It resonated with me. Many of the lyrics I can relate to.

While I did hear the song before I was 17 years of age. I actually did leave my mother’s home when I was 17. The lyrics “It’s hell huggin on my momma from a jail cell” been there & done that. The first time when I was 14. Then for to many years & times after that.

Me & my little sister have different fathers. Both of us have provided our own adversity for our mother, while growing up. As in the song, my mother had many times came home after a long day of work & still cooked meals.

There was times when money was scarce.

The only real differences from the song & my life. My mother was never a crack phiene, refused to ever accept welfare, & was not black.

My mother’s line of thinking was that I was her child, tus her responsibility. She was not going to ask for help in raising me. That a person has to work for what they want & need in life.

Beyond those differences, I could have very well wrote the song myself.

I personally think the song is one of the top 10 of all time. At least for me it is.

Many hip hop songs today fall very short of the quality of lyrics that 2pac had. The materialism & sexual objectification that is rampant in today’s lyrics is surely a lack of talent. Regardless of the kind of music a person likes. I think that talent of any kind can be appreciated.

On July 6, 1994, Paramount unveiled Robert Zemeckis’ Forrest Gump in theaters. The Tom Hanks satire would go on to win six Oscars at the 67th Academy Awards, including best picture. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
Forrest Gump is not stupid. Although his IQ is 75, he sees the world far clearer than most. Through his decent, childlike eyes, we too see things in a less confused and muddled way. In this cheerfully straight-arrow moral tale, Tom Hanks stars as the “wise fool” Forrest Gump and delivers yet another Oscar-level performance. Paramount will win sensational box office with this Robert Zemeckis-directed film.
Raised in the ’50s in rural Alabama by a single mother (Sally Field), Forrest, being “different,” must fend for himself, struggling against not only perceived expectations but boyhood bullies. He unwittingly finds that he’s blessed with a talent — he can run like the wind, which wins him a football scholarship to play for Bear Bryant at the University of Alabama. And there’s no stopping him after that.
An uplifting saga about one young boy’s earnest and good-natured attempts to overcome his disabilities, Forrest Gump is also a cheeky social satire of the past 40 years of U.S. social-political history. Eric Roth’s screenplay, adapted from Winston Groom’s novel, nimbly intertwines Forrest’s life with the seminal social events and players of the past several decades. Unassuming Forrest, with his golly-gee enthusiasm and inbred decency, encounters the likes of Elvis, George Wallace, presidents Kennedy through Nixon, Dick Cavett, John Lennon and Abbie Hoffman as he graduates from ‘Bama, fights in Vietnam, competes in international ping-pong, founds a shrimping company, engages in philanthropy and jogs cross-country.
Contrasting Forrest’s unassuming innocence with the upheavals and rancor of the times, the film is a wisely goofy commentary on the stupidity of smartness.
While Forrest’s foray’s into the dens of the big and powerful are cheekily amusing, the film ambles along over a deeper, darker layer: Forrest’s love for his childhood girlfriend, Jenny (Robin Wright). An abused child, Jenny’s life path is a desperate wander to find solid ground. She falls prey to every social movement and fad of the times; unlike Forrest, whose unwavering strength and sense of right and wrong protect him from being caught up in social slides, Jenny’s genuflections reflect her lack of firm values and inner confidence.
To some extent, one could argue that Jenny symbolizes most of us. If any criticism might be leveled at the film, it is that its most heart-wrenching moments are too adeptly skirted, but, then again, that’s in keeping with Forrest’s strength. Highest praise to Zemeckis, who has reached a higher maturity plane with his gracefully, technically eloquent direction.

Boyhood is the succès d’estime of the year in film. The top critics have sung a chorus of praise.
Richard Linklater, the director, has long been admired among high-minded cinephiles. In 2004 he was the subject of a U.K. Channel 4 documentary, unironically titled St. Richard of Austin—as in Austin, Texas, where he has built a film colony, which was chronicled recently in The New Yorker . Linklater has all the liberal values that people at Channel 4 admire. He is an anti-Hollywood, anti-corporate, vegan cowboy. He rejects the red carpet celebrity
culture of Los Angeles. He would rather make his films in the summer heat of the Lonestar State than in the noxious atmosphere of Hollywood.

In Americanah, a young Nigerian woman, Ifemelu, moves to the United States for school, leaving behind her boyfriend, Obinze, and her family. It’s a story of relocation, far-flung love and life as an alien, spread across three continents. It’s also about the lonely but privileged perspective a stranger gains by entering a new culture. Indeed, it’s more powerful than that in Americanah , because Ifemelu experiences America both as a black woman and as an African woman. In the U.S., those two identities combine for experiences dark and light that Adichie skillfully renders in gray scale.
The story begins with an electricity familiar to readers of Adichie’s previous novel, Half of a Yellow Sun . That book, about the life of two sisters during the Nigerian-Biafran War, won the Orange Prize for Fiction six years ago. I’m still pressing it on strangers; it rests comfortably in my top five favorite books published in the decade.

In SOMETIMES IN APRIL, Raoul Peck (Lumumba), has taken the specific story of the Rwandan genocide of April 1994 and made manifest the universal implications of the events. There is plenty of culpability to go around and Peck is not shy about pointing fingers, but he is also not shy about pointing up the greater lesson of what happened, one that requires acts of personal and political courage as great as those demanded during blood shed.

The book was first published in September 1885 amid considerable fanfare, with billboards and posters around London announcing “The Most Amazing Book Ever Written”. It became an immediate best seller. By the late 19th century, explorers were uncovering ancient civilisations around the world, such as Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, and the empire of Assyria. Inner Africa remained largely unexplored and
King Solomon’s Mines , the first novel of African adventure published in English, captured the public’s imagination.
The “King Solomon” of the book’s title is the Biblical king renowned both for his wisdom and for his wealth. A number of sites have been suggested as the location of his mines, including the workings at the Timna valley near
Eilat . Research published in September 2013 has shown that this site was in use during the 10th century BC as a copper mine possibly by the
Edomites , who the Bible reports were rivals of and frequently at war with King Solomon.
Haggard knew Africa well, having travelled deep within the continent as a 19-year-old during the Anglo-Zulu War and the First Boer War , where he had been impressed by South Africa’s vast mineral wealth and by the ruins of ancient lost cities being uncovered, such as Great Zimbabwe . His original Allan Quatermain character was based in large part on Frederick Courtney Selous, the British white hunter and explorer of Colonial Africa. Selous’s real-life experiences provided Haggard with the background and inspiration for this and many later stories.
Haggard also owed a considerable debt to Joseph Thomson , the Scottish explorer whose book Through Masai Land was a hit in January 1885. [ citation needed] Thomson claimed he had terrified warriors in Kenya by taking out his false teeth and claiming to be a magician, just as Captain Good does in King Solomon’s Mines . Contemporary James Runciman wrote an article entitled King Plagiarism and His Court, interpreted as accusing Haggard of plagiarism for this. Thomson was so outraged at Haggard’s alleged plagiarism that he published a novel of his own, Ulu: an African Romance, which, however, failed to sell.

There is a moment in “Shrek” when the despicable Lord Farquaad has the Gingerbread Man tortured by dipping him into milk. This prepares us for another moment when Princess Fiona’s singing voice is so piercing it causes jolly little bluebirds to explode; making the best of a bad situation, she fries their eggs. This is not your average family cartoon. “Shrek” is jolly and wicked, filled with sly in-jokes and yet somehow possessing a heart.
The movie has been so long in the making at DreamWorks that the late Chris Farley was originally intended to voice the jolly green ogre in the title role. All that work has paid off: The movie is an astonishing visual delight, with animation techniques that seem lifelike and fantastical, both at once. No animated being has ever moved, breathed or had its skin crawl quite as convincingly as Shrek.

Playful and experimental, James Joyce’s autobiographical A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is a vivid portrayal of emotional and intellectual development. This Penguin Modern Classics edition is edited with an introduction and notes by Seamus Deane.
The portrayal of Stephen Dedalus’s Dublin childhood and youth, his quest for identity through art and his gradual emancipation from the claims of family, religion and Ireland itself, is also an oblique self-portrait of the young James Joyce and a universal testament to the artist’s ‘eternal imagination’. Both an insight into Joyce’s life and childhood, and a unique work of modernist fiction, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is a novel of sexual awakening, religious rebellion and the essential search for voice and meaning that every nascent artist must face in order to fully come into themselves.

    Date of publication :1958
    Publisher: Williams Heinemann
    Genre: fictional novel
    Number of pages :224 pages

Things Fall Apart is a classic piece of African literature, and why not, of world literature. The story portrays a typical African rural reality ( Nigerian in this case), where the relationship between religion, white man and the colonisation of the African continent is explained. Certainly, back in the day in Africa (as on other continents but with different nuances) Christian religion expanded by means of an evangelisation process that was not only intended to convey ‘the Lord’s message’, but also as a means to dominate and to colonise. The tool used for this purpose was an imposed educational and governmental process, which was underpinned by the successive construction of churches.
Indeed, whereas education involves a component of emancipation that helps to shape a person, in this case education stands tall as a tool for indoctrination and domination. Such indoctrination was enabled by the work of evangelisers of unshakable faith who subtly wormed their way into villages and towns, in a seemingly harmless way but with a relentless ability to exercise control.
This Christian immersion facilitated the act of building a government consisting in posts that still exist today, such as that of ‘ District Commissioner’, as these were very often filled by whites.
Hence we can state that the book’s main message revolves around the above-mentioned events, which would in turn explain much about the current situation in Africa.
On the other hand, it is worth highlighting that the Christian religion played an incredibly revolutionary role back in the day . It was not in vain that it confronted both factual and spiritual pre-established powers. The fervent faith and enduring convictions of the Christian believers was particularly salient, and their power nowadays is so widespread, that it would be considered revolutionary to go against them, against Christian religion. One should also point out that (as one appreciates in Things Fall Apart) the ‘power of white man’ is also built on the back of the support offered by many black men, both actively and passively.
Let us now turn to the main character of the novel, Okonkwo, whose life in the end is both sad and pitiful. Achebe tells us right from the start that Okonkwo was scared, which is why his behaviour was so virulent. Additionally, it seems that Okonkwo’s chi (his personal God or spiritual guardian) does not allow him to achieve what he would have liked, and it also destines him to perennial bad luck, leading the Igbo farmer to commit suicide.
The novel (or African tradition) thus claims that human beings are pre-destined to their own fate. In other words, irrespective of what one does, fate is already written, i.e., efforts are made in vain as they do not always have the desired result. In this line of thought, the book suggests that both Okonkwo and his father failed , but in different ways.
The latter was a lazy hedonist, while the former was misguided in his sterile efforts. It is also true that Okonkwo’s legacy clearly imposes itself over that of his father’s. In sum, Things Fall Apart is a solid novel that gives us an overview of the African world and its way of thinking and acting.
I would also state that, instead of allowing actions to speak for themselves through the characters, Achebe uses much ‘wording’ to amply inform the reader, although this factor is not necessarily a defect.
One could also say that in structural terms, the novel pans out through the narration of stories that unroll at each traditional ceremony that takes place in Umuofia . In this vein, against the backdrop of fields and yam crops, a combat is depicted followed by the description of a week of festivities etc., all of which are part of their customs. In addition, there is often a certain touch of fable and oral storytelling, both features of African society.
As for the characters , I felt that they were rather irregular . Okonkwo, the white men and other main characters are perfectly set apart; however, there are some characters that are not fully fleshed out (such as some of Okonkwo’s wives and sons) and can often not be told apart. Some of the characters therefore are left incomplete and hardly differentiated.
In this sense, the reader can be surprised to see that Okonkwo’s wives ‘disappear’ and play practically no role during his exile or banishment. As regards the dialogues, I thought they were lively, precise and real. On the other hand, I am not sure if this is a mistake, but on page 83, a certain element of
poetic prose has slipped in: “When the women retired. Obierika presented kola nuts to his in-laws.

The novel takes place in Nigeria prior to and during the Nigerian Civil War (1967–70).When the Igbo people of eastern Nigeria seceded in 1967 to form the independent nation of Biafra, a bloody, crippling three-year civil war followed. That period in African history is captured with haunting intimacy in this artful page-turner…Tumultuous politics power the plot, and several sections are harrowing. But this dramatic, intelligent epic has its lush and sultry side as well: rebellious Olanna is the mistress of Odenigbo, a university professor brimming with anticolonial zeal; business-minded Kainene takes as her lover fair-haired, blue-eyed Richard, a British expatriate come to Nigeria to write a book about Igbo-Ukwu artand whose relationship with Kainene nearly ruptures when he spends one drunken night with Olanna. A Quiet Place is about a wave of blind, deadly arachnid creatures that are sensitive to sound — imagine if the aliens in the Vin Diesel film Pitch Black
were deposited on earth, more or less — but it’s really about isolating an effect and custom-fitting a story around it. When a single utterance or unintended noise means quick and certain death, the audience will hang on every bump of the soundtrack, like a heart patient eyeing an EKG.
There are high-minded ways to interpret A Quiet Place , which develops into an affecting metaphor for the perils of parenthood, but it’s effective primarily as a back-to-basics statement of genre fundamentals. We’re so accustomed to being pummeled into submission by studio soundtracks that the deprivation here has a clarifying effect, reminding us of what’s possible when sound and music is carefully placed. That the film comes from Platinum Dunes, the production company of Transformers director Michael Bay, feels like an act of penance from Hollywood’s chief supplier of ear-splitting rackets.

The Audacity of Hope is Barack Obama’s call for a different brand of politics. He explores those forces—from the fear of losing to the perpetual need to raise money to the power of the media that can stifle even the best intentioned politician. At the heart of this book is Barack Obama’s vision of how we can move beyond our divisions to tackle concrete problems. He examines the growing economic insecurity of American families, the racial and religious tensions within the body politic. It’s major critic is that with his elaborations on all these topics he doesn’t set any priorities.

Primarily we associate it with fantasy, either in the gory netherworlds of the Hostel or Saw movies or the escapist universe of Bond and Bourne, where tension and excitement overshadow the realities of torture, mutilation and death. Violence, for the most part, is about the human capacity to hurt others; and about the way it destroys lives, communities and countries.
So when you hear that Blood Diamond is a very violent movie, don’t take it lightly. This isn’t simply about gunfights and car chases (although both are present and very much correct); Edward Zwick’s film launches with scenes that startle with their savagery, rivalling even Saving Private Ryan’s opening salvo for squirm value. As Sierra Leone’s anti-government warriors spread across the country, villages are razed, women raped and their children shot or abducted. To ensure voter apathy at the upcoming elections, hands are severed with axes and machetes.
It’s against this hellish backdrop that we first meet Solomon (Djimon Hounsou), a family man whose dreams of medical school for his son Dia (Caruso Kuypers) are dashed by the guerrilla insurgency. While Solomon is spared to pan for diamonds at gunpoint, Dia is taken, brainwashed, given a new identity and a gun. This, we soon learn, is what Sierra Leone is up against: beer-swilling bandits who bankroll their fight with smuggled diamonds and spend their gains on, disturbingly, US gangsta rap.
Solomon’s camp is raided and the inhabitants jailed, which is where Leonardo DiCaprio’s Danny Archer comes in; a sharp-witted player whose eyes widen as he learns of Solomon’s million-dollar find. Though there are similarities with the protean trickster of Catch Me If You Can, this is a Leo we’ve never seen before. Amoral and selfish but self-aware, DiCaprio expands on the reservoirs of darkness that Scorsese found in him. In the film’s final straits, when the diamond becomes his Shangri-La, his power and conviction are something to see.
But Blood Diamond falls maddeningly short of greatness in its final hour, partly because of an abundance of subplots. Alongside Solomon and Archer, Zwick introduces journalist Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly), a hard-nosed war reporter just in from Afghanistan, who looks to Archer to help her find the white-collar criminals in the diamond trade. Though her acting is faultless, Connelly’s presence leads to a romance that, however understated, simply stores up trouble for later, requiring redemption and emotional closure on an already overheated climax. On top of that, add an unnecessary political framing device, and what begins as a tough, risk-taking thriller winds down to become a familiar Hollywood triumph-over-adversity story. It’s a heartbreaker. After feeling so much danger, it’s a shame to leave the cinema on a note so safe.
    Great performances, provocative ideas.

Review by Neil McCormick , MUSIC CRITIC

This may well become the most famous
pop greeting ever, muscling out dear old
Lionel Richie. Adele is back, reintroducing
herself with a slightly tentative “Hello”.
Rarely has a single word been freighted with
so much meaning and emotion. From the
opening piano chord and that very first hello
she sounds nervous, sad, determined. As biggest pop star of our age arrives back on
the stage, there’s no dramatic ta-ra, no
thunder of bells and whistles. Rather, she
dares to pull the world into her private
    sphere.
Why Adele turned to the Swedish pop
    magician Max Martin
Hello unfolds slowly. Despite conveying a
mood of emotional uncertainty, it’s a
    supremely confident comeback, a monster
ballad that creeps up on the listener, showing
a persuasive degree of restraint. It rides on
two ominous piano chords, orchestral strings
shading the end of the first verse, swelling
through the second, before the chorus arrives
with a grave blast, the double thump of a bass
drum and her voice jumping up a range. As
the song circles around, everything gradually
steps up a gear, the drums take on a ghostly
skitter, a spooky keyboard floats in, backing
vocals build until it moves towards a very
luscious wall of sound, supporting but not
    overwhelming Adele’s utterly compelling
vocal. A beautiful song of loss and regret, it
takes a grip on the kind of memory every
listener holds somewhere in their heart and
merges it with Adele’s own drama. This sense
of everywoman emotion is what people
always responded to in Adele , she is a pop
diarist, sharing the simple secrets of her heart
    with no pretence.

    Movie Title : War Room
    Director : Alex Kendrick
    Genre : Drama
Actors : Priscilla c. shirer (Elizabeth), Karen Abercrombie (Miss Clara), T.c Stalling (Tony)
    Duration : 2hours
    Released date : 27 November 2015.

Spirituality can be a beautiful thing to explore in cinema, but “War Room” has no interest in engaging its audience on a personal level. It has one single goal, which according to the Kendricks, is the only goal worth having. The film wants to evangelize by preaching an ideology that requires its followers to view the world in black-and-white terms. Grappling with the gray areas in life is seen as a sign of weakness, while acting in one’s own best interest is nothing more than a sinful exercise in selfish pride.
This is the lesson that real estate agent Elizabeth (Priscilla C. Shirer ) must be taught in extended conversations with her client-turned-friend, Miss Clara (Karen Abercrombie). When Elizabeth tries opening up about the unabashed cruelty she endures on a daily basis from her loathsome husband, Tony (T.C. Stallings), Clara refuses to listen. Instead, she urges the long-suffering wife to go back home, empty out a closet and plaster the walls with Bible verses. There, she will summon God to help fight her battles, thus transforming the space into the titular “war room.” Her role as a submissive woman is to treat the man in her life with grace, which will eventually shame him into becoming a good person. God forbid she even considers a divorce.
The film’s centerpiece sequence occurs early on, as Elizabeth sits weeping in her closet while pleading, “God, help him love me again.” This moment is heartbreaking for all the wrong reasons. Since the Kendricks have mistaken one-dimensional caricatures for people who exist in the real world, they forgot to provide Tony with any redeeming qualities that would make us want to root for his marriage. As for the film’s advice to women who are beaten by their husbands, one of Elizabeth’s co-workers advises, “Learn to duck so God can hit him.”
The multitude of problems in their marriage can be boiled down to one cause: Satan. Once the evildoer is cast out of the house in a stirring, borderline psychotic monologue delivered by Elizabeth, everything changes. God promptly interrupts Tony’s dinner with a potential mistress by giving him a stomach ache, and sends him back into his wife’s arms. Before you know it, he’s lost his well-paying job and is facing potential jail time for dirty double-dealing, but Elizabeth remains utterly unfazed. When he asks how she could possibly forgive him for his endless list of transgressions, her answer is unsettling. She insists that she’s staying in the relationship because she loves Jesus, and that it is her godly duty to forever be at his side.

What is love and what it could be is a deeply thoughtful, incisive and engaging exploration of the nature of romantic love. Jenkins identifies the central question of the book as how can love be both biological and a social construct. Jenkins overview of the different ways romantic love has been construed at different times and at different places throughout history might seem like a compelling argument for the view of romantic love as a social construct.
The chapter “what needs to change” builds up a list of ways that romantic love needs to be reconstructed in order to be more inclusive. “Changes” Jenkins believes, will be gradual and will take place “against a backdrop of continuity”.

    Date of publication :1958
    Publisher: Williams Heinemann
    Genre: fictional novel
    Number of pages :224 pages
    reviewer: OKEKE CYNTHIA

Obierika presented kola nuts to his in-lAW

So “Valor” quickly becomes about secrets and lies, guilt and bravery, and hot bodies and awful banter. It’s not the best mix, and not mixed the best way. The CW describes the series as boundaries between military discipline and human desire being tested on a US Army base that houses an elite unit of helicopter pilots trained to perform clandestine international and domestic missions.

While “SEAL Team” on CBS has a certain sober balance between home life and combat, “Valor” verges into the cute and sexed-up too often, including Nora playing drums when she is stressed.

Sometimes, after what is meant to be a witty line, you’re just waiting for a rimshot.

LEGEND OF THE SEEKER is the brainchild of Rob Tapert, who created a basic blueprint for swords ‘n’ sorcery TV shows with his two prior entries in the genre, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess. Legend of the Seeker follows the same model, as Richard, Kahlan, and Zeddicus gather allies in their campaign to defeat Darken Rahl. There’s plenty of action and excitement, a good bit of magic, and the occasional monster — as well as a strong hint of mysticism as Richard gradually learns more about the prophecy that foretold his birth.

Review by Zander H., age 12, Mid-
    America Mensa
    I appreciated
Frankenstein’s iCat for its fascinating explanation about the often baffling subject of bioengineering and its sister sciences. Emily Anthes explains the many sides of today’s modern technology, such as gene modification, cloning, pharmaceutical products (from the farm), prosthesis, animal tag and tracking and gene cryogenics. This book provides a well-rounded summary of these complicated sciences without being boring or simply factual. Her real world examples take us on a journey from the farm, to the pet store and then from the pharmacy to the frozen arc.
Have you ever wondered if the neighborhood cat is spying on you? Read about Operation Acoustic Kitty and find out if this feline fantasy fiction or fact. Do you think bugs are creepy? What about a zombified cyborg beetle? Is Fido so special that you want two of him? Money can buy you an almost exact copy of your pooch BUT don’t expect the same personality. Emily Anthes makes you crave more information. She makes you want to know the future of Earth’s flora and fauna, as well as humanity itself.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who desires a guide to the future of biological science and technology. Frankenstein’s Cat is best read by the light of a glow-in-the- dark fish, while cuddling your favorite cloned dog and drinking a glass of genetically modified milk.
