Nonso Agbo’s sculpture “Amazon Journalist” leaves a layman wondering even at his first glance. The sculpture depicts a woman who by her appearance- the wrapper round her waist, bead on her necks, her puff-puff styled hair with her fairly covered chest, – is firmly clothes to the traditional requirements of her culture. Her two little toddlers clung onto her, one is strapped to her back while the other child looking up earnestly seeks the attention of a mother whose heart is firm on her purpose even as her little child reaches out. One very compelling sight is what she holds on her two hands, one of which is raised, with a bead around her wrist and a pen in her palm. The left hand holds what is believed to be a piece of squeezed paper. She stands on a podium, with a determined look on her face as she calls, reminding one of Martin Luther king with raised hands. This sculpture is indeed engaging, as it calls for a deep reflection from any passerby or audience.

This sculpture’s illustration and interpretation is profound; it seeks to elucidate the struggle for focus on the part of a thriving woman who combines journalism with the domesticating role of raising her children. The struggle is evident even on the part of children who compete among themselves for her attention. Somehow, this artwork strongly goes a long way to inform about the strength of the women folk and how much calculation a woman engages in, in her bid to balance work and family. She craves to be heard.

Nonso Agbo’s work, even in the years that would come, would still remain an item of interest. It would only add to the never ending/dying interest and puzzle which the womenfolk have command from society.

Without a Flinch or a doubt, this sculpture would do well in any Journalistic exhibition that it would find itself in. “Amazon Journalist” could not have been any better.

The sculpture, the Amazon Journalist, by Nonso Agbo tends to pass an interesting message to the viewers at first glance. The art shows a woman holding a pen and a paper and also carrying her little boy on her back; she also has another son standing by her side. The woman tends to be addressing someone as she is holding a paper and raising a pen with her right hand as if she wants to ask a question. The woman on the art is wearing a native dress, with beads round her neck and the ancient hair style. The artwork is really impressive as it passes a message to the society about how important Journalism is and how motherhood can be challenging to the occupation.

The art work portrays a very clear message on how women combine Journalism and motherhood. It expresses how important Journalism is to the society as it tends to pass information across to the public. The Art also talks about how much burden that can be to the mothers as seen in the art where the little boy standing on the woman’s right side is dragging her while she is committed fully to her profession.

The major flaw in the art is the colour used; the darkness of the artwork can send a wrong signal. Despite all, the work is a really good one as it encourages journalism and motherhood as well.

The Artist portrayed the image of a woman carrying one of her children on her back and one walking with her looking at the child on the back. The boy by the woman’s right side seems to be seeking full attention of his mother who is carried away in seriousness of another duty (journalism) while holding pen and paper on both hands. She is dressed in native attire that depicts Igbo culture. The sculpture is bold enough and its surface is smooth. The art work is beautiful and a commendable job by the artist since it perfectly portrays how women strive to combine two tasking jobs – journalism and womanhood.

The sculpture depicts the combination of a woman’s role as a mother and a journalist. It shows the risk and sacrifice made by female reporters in service to mankind and society. Critically viewing,, the children appear tired which is a clear evidence that they have spent so much time with their mother watching her going about her duty. The work also reveals the difficulty faced by the woman in Journalism as her work material is limited to pen and paper without any camera or technical equipment.

The sculptor did a very good work by making the work bold enough and real. Viewing it from afar the work can be clearly seen. The major flaw is that it appeared as though combining family role and profession is a difficult task when in actual fact, that is how women were created to survive….

The Amazon Journalist is a compelling artwork that draws attention at the very first glance. The sculpture shows a woman in traditional attire with two kids, one on her back and the other smiling by her right hand side, making frantic efforts to get her attention. The woman is holding a paper on her left hand and a pen on the right, with her mouth open as if she was asking a question with rapt attention though distracted to her kids. Their attire of the woman and her two kids depicted journalism in its early days. This work a very good inspirational piece which portrays to the world the difficulty in combining two tasking jobs – journalism and womanhood.

The write up at the bottom of the statue which says “In the honour of the female reporter who combine two tasking job: Womanhood and Journalism” says it all. The work portrays that unlike men in journalism the woman faces more challenges in keeping up with her work and also taking care of her family. The picture says a lot about career women in these modern days where most of them are more interested their career than building a family compared with ways back were woman find a way to cope with their job and their family together.
