The sculpture “The Town Crier” by Nonso Agbo is yet another artwork of his that evokes lucid and passionate responses from an onlooker. It depicts a man, barely naked, except for a little piece of clothing which he straps around his waist. His legs, chest and arms are bare except for his right hand which clutches a small stick and his left hand which holds a wooden gong supported on his ribs. But what is most catchy of all, an object of interest is his face. It showcases widely opened mouth which calls out practically on top of his voice, desiring to be heard by all and sundry. This sculpture must be commended for the reflective stance which it commands as it sparks off interest at first glance.

Nonso Agbo’s “Town Crier” indeed attracts a response and interpretation. It depicts the very beginning of the voyage of communication and the ordeal that it demands from the information carriers at that time. What is today known as mass communication began from first a single individual moving from place to place within a small local setting, carrying information with him while ensuring that the message gets to every nook and cranny of the community. The location within which the painting itself stands – the mass communication complex – draws onlookers down memory lane, reminding us of where it all started.

This is yet another theme that Nonso Agbo’s work seeks to portray. This is very evident from the look on the town crier’s face. This work is a master piece. Again and again, Nonso Agbo shows himself a vital tool in illustrating journalistic messages. no addition or subtraction should have made the work better. The “Town Crier” is indeed a head turner.

The sculpture, “The Town Crier” by Nonso Agbo is compelling, even at first glance.. The work shows a man who could be referred to as the Town Crier. He is holding a wooden gong and a stick. From the movement of the man’s mouth we can assume that he is passing across information to the public. The man is tall with clean-shaven hair. He is also tying a lose wrapper around his waist. This artwork is really impressive as it shows the way information was disseminated in the past.

When looking at the sculpture one of the first things you will see is the Ekwe (wooden gong) and a stick which were on each of the man’s hands. This shows a form of traditional journalism. The artwork shows a town crier who is committed and determined across information no matter what it took to do so. It further communications the benefits of communication in the society today. Nonso Agbo really did a wonderful job in “The Town Crier” as it portrays the importance of journalism and the history of journalism especially how it started in traditional society.

One basic flaw in the work is the loose wrapper around the man’s waist which almost left him naked. This could pose a moral problem when viewed by the public.

But in all, the work is a creative piece, a nice job by Nonso Agbo.

This work “The Town Crier” which is a naturalistic work is quite fascinating at a first glance. The work portrays a young man carrying a wooden gong on one hand and holding a stick on the other. From the work it is seen that the man is a traditional news man (town crier). This artist, Nonso Agbo has done a great work by portraying journalism in its earliest form as a way of projecting the department of mass communication.

The naturalistic sculpture tends to show a great passion for journalism by the way the man is projected. The man’s clothing expresses his culture and the instrument he is holding shows how information is passed across as part of culture of a society.

Nonso Agbo has done a good work by showing the public the earliest form of journalism and the passion journalists have for their profession.
