Before buying anything on Flipkart or Amazon, I generally review all negative comments first and then the positive comments from others before making my decision to buy. User-generated content from strangers influences my buying decisions more than recommendations from family and friends.

Healthcare decisions as I pointed out in one of my previous post is mostly influenced by online and social media ratings and rankings which is directly what we call as Online Reputation.

Online reputation management was once a real testing tool to me and then there were different ways and means to manage this. From qualified professionals to software which can do wonders from tracking to auto posting comments for keyword combinations based on the AND – OR algorithm can be used for ORM. Today its much more than that and requires hardcore understanding as it has become the tool for competitors to play on us.

So we need to face it as we go ahead. Hospitals need to improve patient care and patient experience to elevate the reputation of the hospital both offline and online which in turn will attract more patients.

As important as a positive and 5 star rating, negative online comments can damage your hospital reputation if left alone, especially when social media is the source of communication.

Proactive counter measures are to be placed which makes us in a better position to engage our patients and public with our hospital environment.

Six simple beginner tips for Online Reputation Management

1. Protect from negative reviews – Unhappy people tend to be the most vocal about their experiences, while happy or satisfied people rarely write about their experience (especially if it’s a visit to the doctor). Have a comprehensive feedback process to get satisfied patients to give positive reviews and if a negative review is identified engage with the patient online or offline to resolve their problem and get the review removed or improved.
