Agence France-Presse photographer Ronaldo Schemidt won the prestigious 2018 World Press Photo of the Year Award on Thursday with his image of a masked Venezuelan protester on fire, taken during violent protests in Caracas.
“The jury… awards the first prize to Ronaldo Schemidt’s picture entitled ‘Venezuela Crisis’,” judges said at a prize-giving ceremony in Amsterdam. Schemidt’s photo also won the Spot News-Singles category.
AFP photographers Oliver Scarff and Juan Barreto were also honoured, respectively scooping first prize in the sports category and third in the spot news stories.
